Agronomy

Sand Valley provides a working environment where interns are executing the skills they study in school. Student interns who participate in the Sand Valley Internship program should expect to have a world class learning experience and continued education that goes beyond the classroom.

AGRONOMY

Responsibilities

Our internship program is designed to provide the intern with a practical account of all aspects of golf course maintenance and management skills
including but not limited to:
• Finish and grow-in work including: seeding greens, tees, fairways, native areas using various techniques including hydro mulching, seed bed preparation
• Aquatic maintenance of lakes and ponds
• Toro Lynx central control training
• Fertilizer/pesticide application, calibration and record keeping

• Management of small crews for various
projects
• Turfgrass cultural practices (mowing,
verticutting, topdressing, aerifying,
rolling, etc…)
• Management of fine fescue fairways
• Management and restoration of natural areas/ sand barrens
• Management of grass tennis courts
• Exposure to minimalist maintenance approach producing firm and fast conditions

Work Experience

Course Set Up and Everyday Maintenance

• Setup golf courses, mowing, and bunker maintenance
• Manage TDR/Moisture Meter readings
• Operate all types of golf course and construction equipment

Irrigation Systems

• Perform irrigation audits
• Repair and maintain sprinkler heads
• Setup overnight watering

Turfgrass Maintenance

• Manage Bentgrass, Fine Fescue, and even Ryegrass in various maintained areas
• Make pesticide and fertilizer applications to various turf types and areas
• Perform various cultural practices
• Assist with maintaining the native areas such as sand barrens, tree groves, and sedge
 Fairway running toward a sandy dune

Crew Management

• Manage sunrise and sunset crews
• Utilize job boards and task tracker
• Assist crew with on course needs

Facility and Shop Experience

• Assist with equipment parking and alignment
• Check cutting units (quality of cut and height of cut)
• Grind reels and bedknives
• Equipment setup and adjustments
• Preventative maintenance and various repairs
2027 Internship

The Agronomy Internship offers students and recent graduates the opportunity to build practical experience in a learning-focused, team environment. Interns work alongside experienced agronomy leaders and team members while gaining exposure to golf course maintenance, turfgrass management, irrigation, equipment care, and natural area stewardship.
